When You’re Human, You Need a Nap: Why Today’s Post Did Not Happen–Yet!

One of the downsides to being a one-woman act is that everything–and I do mean everything–falls into my lap. From research, drafting, outlining, editing, and graphic design (such as it is), The Eftsoons Writer completely falls into my lap to do at some point.

I love every minute of it.

On the downside, it means there are some days when I can’t get to everything–sometimes not even writing for the blog. Like today.

Sometimes, you have to admit to being human and give yourself the care and rest you need. Which is precisely what I did today.

Today’s post was going to be on St. Catherine of Siena’s Dialogue. This is not an easy piece to work with, especially if you are translating it into 21st century mental health and self-care practices for people who definitely do not have the same way of thinking as a 14th century woman.

Much in The Dialogue is steeped in traditional Christian terminology and ways of thinking. Sin, penance, and what it means to live a virtuous life are very much what we would expect them to be. There’s also a lot of mystic imagery which would not be entirely out of place in a William Blake poem.

As with Margery Kempe and George MacDonald there are some very surprising nuggets of wisdom that are as at home in the 21st century as they were in the 14th. This should give us all a little hope.

If a 14th century woman without the benefit of psychology, psychotherapy, or modern medicine was able to come up with the same good advice anyone of any creed would agree with, then there’s hope for the world yet.

Below is a short reel of quotes I did for Instagram.

I posted it here to give you a little sneak peek. The full post will be up and running tomorrow!

Support The Eftsoons Writer

Your support and continued reading mean so much to me! This is a project which I do because I really do love doing it. Unfortunately, I don’t earn anything from sharing my favorite books with you. Anything donated will go to essentials (like coffee!) and the time and effort necessary to keep the content coming!
